NORTH OGDEN — A five-day theater performance at North Ogden’s somewhat controversial Barker Park Amphitheater is set to begin later this week.

The musical “Once on This Island” will be performed at 8 p.m. on July 6, 7, 9, 13 and 14, according to a press release from the city.

“With the desire to bring the community together through the Arts, Weber County residents will enjoy the opportunity to support local talent amid a natural backdrop that competes with any Viennese concert venue,” the release said.

The production will be one of the first times the newly completed amphitheater will be used. The venue’s first test will be on July 4 during North Ogden Cherry Days activities with a concert and fireworks show.

Neighbors and critics of the amphitheater will be keeping close tabs on the performance. The amphitheater is the focus of an ongoing lawsuit filed by nearby residents against the city in an effort to halt the venue’s construction. A judge in May rebuffed the residents’ call for a temporary court order to halt construction on the amphitheater.

The city acquired a decibel meter to measure sound in an attempt to be mindful of the neighbors’ concerns. The council approved changes to city ordinances by spelling out maximum sound levels at amphitheater events.

Tickets to the musical can be purchased online and can be found on North Ogden City’s website.
