Edwin Cole Bearss will present “Farthest Forward: Pickett & Pettigrew at Gettysburg” at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 12, in room 219 at the Eastman Employee Center, located at 400 South Wilcox Drive in Kingsport. The program is free and open to the public.
Bearss, who became a member of the Marine Corps Raiders in 1942, has an amazing history of his own. The Raiders were an elite group hand-picked from serving members of the regular Marine Corps. They were all volunteers, unmarried and in superb physical condition. Their training was rigorous with hand-to-hand combat drills, long-distance swimming, running, self-sufficiency and rifle and pistol marksmanship skills heavily emphasized. Forced marches were the norm, rather than the exception, and the men were constantly pushed to the limits of human endurance.
A member of the greatest generation, Bearss has established himself as a top Civil War Historian and was honored in June with the American Battlefield Trust’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for his many decades dedicated to researching and relating the nation’s past to millions of people, as well as his advocacy for battlefield preservation. A revered historian and historically-accurate storyteller, Bearss has made presentations all over the United States and around the world.
Bearss was one of the stars of Ken Burns’ award-winning PBS TV series “The Civil War,” which introduced generations to the compelling subject of the nation’s deadliest conflict. Thousands more have enjoyed the historian’s unique tours of historic sites associated with the Civil War, the American Revolution, World War I and World War II in Europe; Abraham Lincoln’s assassination; and the American West - each delivered at a brisk pace and in his distinctive baritone voice.
Prior to the presentation, TCCWRT members and others who secure a reservation dine with the guest speaker at 5 p.m. at The Chop House in Kingsport. For more information about the program or to request a dinner reservation, contact Wayne Strong at (423) 323-2306 or email email@example.com.
